What are Open Fabrication Hours?

Open Fabrication Hours give the greater campus community access to some of the IDeATe fabrication facilities and personnel.  In other words, if you have never taken an IDeATe course, this is your chance to use our 3D printers, laser cutters, or wood working tools.  For laser cutting and 3D printing, bring your prepared file to IDeATe, and we will help you bring your part into reality.  IDeATe students continue to have their regular access level any time the facilities are open and Hunt Library schedule permitting.

When are Open Fabrication Hours?

  • Academic Year: IDeATe has its primary Open Fabrication Hours Monday through Friday from 5:00 to 6:00pm for laser cutters and 3D printers.  Wood shop* open hours are most Fridays, 2:00 to 4:00pm.
* IDeATe students may request wood shop time by appointment at times other than Open Hours.  Email help@ideate.cmu.edu at least one full business day in advance.
  • Summer Sessions: By appointment only

Where? - Hunt Library, A-level

  • Laser cutters and 3D printers - enter through room A5
