Laser Cutters

Our Epilog Fusion Pro Laser Cutters will only be made available during times when they can be staffed by an IDeATe staff member or authorized safety monitor.  All laser cutter users must complete the EH&S Laser Cutter Safety, online training, in addition to the EH&S Fire Extinguisher course, in person.

How to Get Access

If you are an IDeATe student send one email to help@ideate.cmu.edu with the following:
  • Certificates from Laser Cutter and Fire Extinguisher training (EH&S Links Above).
  • Thoroughly read the Epilog/Corel Quick Start Guide. This document contains all IDeATe operating procedures, useful tips on using the Epilog Fusion Pro Laser Cutters, and software guidance to prepare files for laser cutting and etching.

  • After reading and watching videos in the guide, your email should also include 3-5 sentences about something new you learned specific to the laser cutters at IDeATe and why this matters.
If you are not an IDeATe student, in addition to the steps above, add a note to the email indicating the following:
  • State that you are not affiliated with IDeATe
  • Tell us with which department or program you are affiliated
  • Why you would like access to our laser cutters

NOTE: IDeATe’s laser cutters cut flat materials such as cardboard, fabric, paper, MDF, plywood, and acrylic.  The IDeATe facility limits laser cutting to a limited selection of materials known to be safe.
