Wanted: RA to Help Make Laser Cutters Smarter

Researchers in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute are looking for a Research Assistant to work with them on their project: Smart Design Files that Adapt to Any Material or Laser Cutter.
The project aims to make the laser cutting process smarter and effortless, so that anyone can take an existing design (e.g. designs on Thingiverse) and fabricate it using the materials they have. They are looking for a Research Assistant who can further develop and refine our prototype. You will get to experiment with 2D and 3D modelling tools, prototype laser-cut designs with various materials, and build an interactive tool for makers and fabricators. As part of the team, you will gain first hand research experience and co-author a publication.
The researchers are looking for students with experience or skills in front end and/or back end development (preferably in Python); experience or interest in CAD, digital modeling, or fabrication; experience or interest in creativity support tools; experience with 2D or 3D graphics programming is a plus.
RAs would need to commit to 9-12 hours per week over the spring semester. Work can be done for independent study credit (9 or 12 units).
If interested, please send the following to Nur Yildirim (yildirim@cmu.edu):

  • short description of your experience and skills related to the project
  • resume
  • list of times that you are available for a weekly team meeting during the spring semester
