Hybrid Body Lab Artist-in-Residence

The Hybrid Body Lab at Cornell University proudly presents an eight-week residency in the summer of 2023 for artists to collaborate with researchers to combine on-body design with emerging miniaturized technology. We are inviting artists who use skin and their appendages as a medium from any of the on-body art disciplines, including but not limited to on-skin fashion, (temporary) tattoo art, nail art, makeup, and body art. Artistic practices which sit in between mediums and categories are especially encouraged.

During the eight-week residency, the resident will be invited to get in touch with the latest interactive on-body technologies the lab is exploring, as well as collaborate with lab researchers to conceptualize and develop projects, to explore possibilities of technology-involved art practices.

The residency will occur for a duration of 8 weeks between May 10th, 2023, and August 5th, 2023. Application due January 15th, 2023. More information: hybridbodylab.com/air.

The Hybrid Body Lab at Cornell University, founded and directed by Prof. Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao, focuses on the invention of culturally-inspired materials, processes, and tools for crafting technology on the body surface. Designing across scales, we explore how body scale interfaces can enhance our relations with everyday products and both natural and man-made environments. We conduct research at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction, Wearable & Ubiquitous Computing, Digital Fabrication, Interaction Design, and Fashion & Body Art. We synthesize this knowledge to contribute a culturally-sensitive lens to the future of designs that interface the body and the environment.

ICYMI: Playtest Night

What is a "Playtest Night?" It's a place where you can test your projects and/or help others test their projects, part of the CMU Playtesting, a collaboration between Entertainment Technology Center, IDeATe, and Human-Computer Interaction. Playtest Night is held (almost) every Tuesday, 6-8 pm in IDeATe Studio A (Hunt Library, first floor). If you're interested in participating as a playtester or if you would like to have your project playtested, contact Weilin Yuan at etc-playtest-coordinator@andrew.cmu.edu. Upcoming Fall 2022 Playtest Nights: December 6.
