Join IDeATe instructor James Gyre on March 16, 23, and 30 for a basic woodworking workshop.

All modern fabrication is built upon and still expects users to have basic woodworking skills. In this 3-part workshop, become familiar with the safe and effective use of basic woodworking tools: hand saws, power saws, drills, clamping, gluing, screws, power drills, sanding---all the basics. Students will build a birdhouse or other small project (wall shelf, desk organizer) that covers the use of each of our basic tools. We will also discuss working with wood, including grain direction, species selection, and when it's the right material for the task. Also covered are some basic wood finishing techniques so your pieces can be ready for use.

This workshop is free and open to all CMU students. Limited spaces available so please sign up.

Mini 4 Course: The Design and Making of Hair and Skin Products

Gizelle Sherwood will be teaching a mini 4 offering of the hands-on class, 09-110, The Design and Making of Hair and Skin Products. The class meets on Fridays from 1-4:50. There are no prerequisites.

This hands-on course targets students from across the CMU community who are interested in learning how chemistry applies to their everyday life. We will focus on students gaining knowledge of the chemical components in cosmetic products and on the methods for preparing them (from shampoos and conditioners to lotions, soaps, and creams). We will emphasize good laboratory practices and safety as well as the fundamental chemical and physical concepts that govern the product behavior and use. The overarching goal is that the students have a hands-on laboratory experience and develop a full understanding of the science behind the products that they use every day.
